What is Acupuncture meridian?

Often we are asked,"What is Acupuncture Meridian therapy and how does it work?" We hope you find this to be informative.

What is medical acupuncture?
Acupuncture, simply stated, is a health science which is used to successfully treat both pain and dysfunction in the body. Acupuncture has it's roots deeply placed in China. In fact, authorities agree that the science is between 5000 and 7000 years old.

Acupuncture has it's primary notoriety as the utilization of needles placed in the skin at various locations to relieve pain or affected body parts. Early Chinese physicians discovered that there is an energy network traversing just below the surface of the skin which communicates from the exterior to the interior organs and structures at over 1000 "Acupoints" in the body. This energy works in harmony with the body's circulatory, nervous, muscular, digestive, genitourinary and all other systems of the body. When this vital energy has become blocked or weakened, an effect in a body system or anatomic location becomes evident. Stimulation of one or a combination of key "Acupoints" on the body may restore harmony to the affected area.

How does acupuncture work?
The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over it's surface. These channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish tissues. An obstruction in the movement of the energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.

The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points. The acupuncture needles unblock the obstruction at the dams and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.

The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other chemicals or hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

Is Acupuncture painful?
Generally speaking, needle acupuncture does not cause pain. However, it may elici sensations such as light pressure or feel like a mild pinch depending on the technique used and the area involved. Most people are amazed at how little they feel during treatment. Red laser stimulation is painless and equally effective.

How are points stimulated?
Various techniques are used including: finger pressure (acupressure), red laser light, mild electrical stimulations, moxibustion (an herb that is heated) or the gentle insertion of sterile,hair-thin needles.

How many treatments are needed?
Acute conditions may respond in a short period of time. However, acupuncture is rarely a "quick fix". For optimum results, expect 2-3 visits per week for the first 2-4 weeks, then fewer visits as the desired result is achieved. Research shows that many conditions respond after 8-16 treatments.
