Clinical research trial might sound suspicious and new to many of you. You might have good reasons to hesitate being a part of the unknown when you join a clinical trial. Well now let us take a look at why these clinical research trials are a viable option to consider and that they could be the right choice for you. Meet this year’s Very Important Patient – Brittani Powell.Brittani Powell was your average lively 14 year old, excelling as an eighth grade honors student when her entire world came crashing on her in July 2009. A Cell tumor was discovered on her spine and she had to immediately undergo emergency decompression and tumor resection of the cervical spine. Her tumor was completely removed in August 2009. The worst did not end here. Unfortunately the tumor reappeared, resulting in her undergoing two more surgeries within 2 months. Doctors then concluded that they were yet to see a tumor that large and aggressive and gave Brittani about 6-24 months to live.
At this point, her doctors recommended a 19-week chemotherapy session to help recover from the cancer. Sadly, her pain and tumor returned once the chemotherapy stopped. Surgery was deemed a risky option anddoctors recommended radiation to treat the cancer.Her family meanwhile found a clinical research trial in Santa Monica that could help her. While trying to get accepted into this trial program, her condition deteriorated and she developed paralysis on all four limbs. She immediately was provided with surgery to allow her to walk and move her limbs again. But doctors did recommend that they not put her through such harsh procedures any further and let nature run its course.Brittani's family then told them about the clinical research trial and their family’s interest in trying that out. The doctors respected their wishes and proceeded with the surgery. The surgery was a success and she could use all her limbs.
Lazarex helped her get into the Denosumabclinical research trial. She has only been showing signs of progress with no relapses. After a year of homeschooling, she is now back with her eight grade class and is one of the normal kids.
